Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Republic of Kurdistan. On January 22, 1946, Qazi Mohammad \u2013 revered as Peshawa (meaning leader in Kurdish) Qazi among the Kurdish nation \u2013 declared the Republic of Kurdistan in the city of Mahabad in eastern (Iranian) Kurdistan. Peshawa Qazi, the first leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, was the President of the Republic of Kurdistan. Kurds all over the world celebrate the anniversary of the republic on January 22 every year.<\/p>\n
PDKI organized an event to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Republic of Kurdistan in Hawler, the capital of southern (Iraqi) Kurdistan. Mustafa Hijri, the current leader of PDKI, was the keynote speaker at the event. Aside from members of PDKI in Hawler, a number of Kurdish political figures, representatives of various organizations and intellectuals from all parts of Kurdistan attended the event.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Mr. Hijri hailed the legacy of the Republic of Kurdistan and renewed PDKI\u2019s commitment to the core values and objectives of the republic.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the founder of the Republic of Kurdistan, our party remains, in spite of the many obstacles it has faced for the past 70 years, committed to the principles of self-determination for the Kurdish people, gender equality, liberty and democracy,\u201d Mr. Hijri said in his speech.’<\/p>\n
\u201cWe carry on the political legacy of Peshawa Qazi,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Mr. Hijri also highlighted the fact the first Peshmerga Forces were formed in the Republic of Kurdistan in 1946.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday,\u201d Mr. Hijri said \u201cpeshmerga are acknowledged in many parts of the world for their struggle against terrorism and in pursuit of liberty and democracy in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
