For the past three weeks,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the cities in eastern (Iranian) Kurdistan bordering southern (Iraqi) Kurdistan have witnessed strikes in response to the Iranian regime\u2019s closure\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of the border crossings<\/span><\/span>. In a statement issued today, PDKI is calling on the people of eastern Kurdistan to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stage a general strike in solidarity with cities bordering southern\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kurdistan, but also\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to condemn the Iranian Islamist regime\u2019s policy of economic strangulation of Kurdistan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The strikes began in the city of Bane and later spread to Jwanrow, Mariwan, Piranshar, Saghez, and Urmia. In spite of increased militarization and intimidation by the Iranian regime, including<\/span><\/span>\u00a0numerous arrests<\/span><\/span>, the civilian\u00a0<\/span><\/span>population in the cities bordering southern Kurdistan<\/span><\/span>\u00a0continued to strike.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The closure of the border crossing<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0between the two different parts of Kurdistan\u00a0has resulted in rising unemployment and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a worsening of the economic difficulties and poverty<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in eastern Kurdistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PDKI is calling on the people all over Kurdistan to join the strikes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lately, novel methods of civil resistance\u00a0<\/span><\/span>against the Iranian regime have been invented in Kurdistan<\/span><\/span>. For example,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kurdish civilians have spread<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>several hundred meter long tablecloths on the ground in several cities to symbolically warn about the lack of food and widespread poverty that will follow if the border crossings remain closed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the plundering of the natural resources of Kurdistan by the Islamist regime, it has been a longstanding and consistent government policy in Iran to keep Kurdistan in a state of economic deprivation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Trade with southern Kurdistan is therefore the only means for tens of thousands of Kurds to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>find employment and an income in order to survive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
