Statement by the PDKI on the New Wave of Protests in Iran
The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, by issuing a statement, expressed its support for the new wave of protests and demonstrations by bazaar merchants and the deprived peoples of Iran. The text of the statement is as follows:
On Sunday, December 28, the merchants of Tehran’s Grand Bazaar closed their shops and began demonstrations in protest of unbearable inflation and the shocking decline in the value of the toman against the dollar. The protests then spread to many other bazaars in Tehran and to other cities across Iran, and they are still ongoing.
Runaway inflation, unbearable price hikes, and deteriorating living conditions have taken a severe toll on Iran’s impoverished population. This is not the first time that peoples of Iran have taken to the streets to peacefully express their grievances. However, instead of addressing these issues, the Islamic Republic has repeatedly responded to the people’s demands with brutal suppression.
The squandering of the country’s wealth and resources, incompetence, irresponsibility, and the expenditure of funds on the anti-human agendas of the regime’s rulers, as well as widespread theft and embezzlement by the Islamic Republic’s officials and mafias, are among the factors that have brought the lives and livelihoods of the peoples of Iran to a point where they no longer have the ability to provide even the most basic necessities for their families.
The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan believes that the crises currently facing Iranian society are not merely economic issues; they are primarily a sign of the political crisis that has plagued the people for years. As long as this regime remains in power, the situation will continue to worsen. The Islamic Republic neither wants nor has the capability to resolve these problems.
The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan supports the new wave of protests and demonstrations by bazaar merchants and impoverished Iranians. However, the party believes that unless all social classes and groups unite and intensify their efforts to free themselves from this criminal regime, the Islamic Republic will continue to rule and suppress the people.
